The Effect of Technology On Our Lives

It hasn't taken very long for Technology to become a routine part of our lives. Many are now the proud owners of a computer with broadband internet access. Some even own laptops that are equipped to pick up wireless internet signals from their phone company (or another source). We shop online, do online banking, play online, and do research online, store our photo albums online and communicate with our family and friends online. On Thanksgiving Day, instead of a long distance call to Iraq, we called our son on Yahoo Instant Messenger. His birthday was 2 days later and we sent him a Hallmark e-card. And speaking of calling, there is no such thing as long distance in the continental US when you have a phone company that operates over broadband internet (like Vonage).
What does all of this mean? It means Technology will be even more important in the lives of our children and grandchildren. Technology should be used as a support in education. It should be integrated into all areas. It seems to come second nature for the kids. They pick up the how and the why at a fast rate. Three of my Enrichment class students have colloborated together this week and taught one another how to make a PowerPoint presentation. Another student, with a little direction has figured out how to write basic html for web pages. The use of PowerPoint, Word, HTML, digital cameras, and blogs can fire and excite the techie spirit in a student.
