MACUL Conference

I am at the 2006 MACUL Conference today (Thursday, March 9) and tomorrow (Friday, March 10).

  • This morning I attended a session with Kristin Furdak from the Discovery Educator Network. Her topic was "Using Web Logs (Blogs) In and Out of the Classrom". She showed once again the value of blogs (and they are free) to students and educators. She discussed their potential to teaching and learning. But schools are slow to catching on to why and how to use them. I plan to attend 3 0r 4 sessions with Will Richardson tomorrow. Mr. Richardson is one of the experts in this field. Kristin Furdak also encourage teachers to become involved in the Discovery Educator Network. Through this network, teachers have an opportunity to improve their tech skills, share with others, and sometimes test and maybe keep new tech products.
  • After my first session, I spent some time among the vendors. Administrators, Teachers, and Paraprofessionals should check out Michigan LEARNPORT. The Michigan Department of Education is providing professional development online at this site. Once you submit your name and school district code, they provide you with a user name and password. Registration at Michigan LEARNPORT qualifies Michigan Educators for free Net Trekker d.i. access.
  • Also check out: Understanding Math, AverMedia, Discovery Education, Rosetta Stone, Tool Factory and Promax Tech.

In the afternoon, I caught 3 more sessions.

  • "Behind the Classroom Website: Instructional Opportunities" presented by Anthony Corte. Mr. Corte and his c0-presenters were showing how Blackboard is being used by schools to take learning online, get more student involvement, keep parents updated, and keep school employees better informed. Mr. Corte has a test site that contains his slide presentation from this session.(login: guest06 - password: macul06)
  • "Using Camtasia Multimedia Tutorials to Instruct via the Internet" was presented by Emily Barton from Michigan State University. We were shown how to use the Camtasia software to produce a training video.
  • "K-3 MI CLIMB Science With a "Technology Twist"! was presented by Anne Tapp. She directed us to a MDE site where lesson plans are available to teachers teaching K-3 Science using Technology. Much of their work is supportive of the METS standards and is based on the MI CLIMB standards and objectives.

Tomorrow I will tell you more about:
